CECC confirms 8 more imported COVID-19 cases; cases arrive in Taiwan from Indonesia, the US, and the UK

On December 12, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced eight new confirmed imported cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. Among those eight new cases, four arrived in Taiwan from Indonesia, three came from the United States, and one traveled from the United Kingdom.

The CECC pointed out that Cases #727, #730, and #732 are three female migrant workers from Indonesia. Those three Indonesian migrant workers are between 20 to 40 years old. They came to Taiwan to work on November 27. They were tested for COVID-19 on December 10 before completing the quarantine period. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the cases on December 12, and the Ct values for their test results were between 34 to 35.6.

Case #728 is a Taiwanese woman in her 40s. The Taiwanese woman visited the United Kingdom to work in July and returned to Taiwan with two of her family members on November 27. During the home quarantine period, she developed fatigue, muscle pain, and other symptoms on December 4. She experienced a fever on December 6, and the health authority then arranged her medical care and COVID-19 testing. She tested negative. However, her symptoms didn’t improve. She sought medical attention again and took another test on December 9, and she was admitted to the hospital. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on December 12.

Case #729 is a Taiwanese woman in her 20s. The woman traveled to the United States for studies in August 2019. She returned to Taiwan on December 2 and underwent home quarantine after entry. The woman began to experience nasal congestion, an abnormal sense of smell and taste, and other symptoms on December 8. After she notified the health authority of her symptoms on December 9, the health authority arranged for her to seek medical attention and to be tested for COVID-19. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on December 12.

Case #731 is an over 20-year-old female businessperson from Indonesia. The Indonesian businesswoman traveled to Taiwan with five other travelers on November 25. She hasn’t developed any symptoms since arrival. After completing the quarantine period on December 10, the businesswoman went to a hospital to take a self-paid test. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on December 12, and the Ct value was 34.

Case #733 is a family member of Case #734, and they are a Taiwanese woman in her 30s and a boy under the age of five, respectively. They resided in the United States for an extended period of time. They returned to Taiwan on December 6 together and stayed at home to undergo home quarantine. Case #733 began to experience an itchy throat, an abnormal sense of smell and other symptoms on December 9. The health authority then arranged for the two individuals to seek medical attention and to be tested for COVID-19 on December 11. Case #734 developed a fever when seeking medical attention. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the cases on December 12.

The CECC reported that a cumulative total of 114,742 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 112,239. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 733 cases. Of the 733 confirmed cases, 641 are imported; 55 are indigenous; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; 1 case has unknown sources of infection; and 1 case (Case #530) has been removed (Case #530 is not assigned to any patients). Of the confirmed cases, there have been 7 deaths, and 601 patients have been released from isolation, with the other 125 patients remaining hospitalized in isolation.
