On August 16, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced 23,172 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. Of the 23,172 new cases, 22,902 are domestic and 270 are imported. The CECC announced 16 deaths today.

Regarding the 22,902 new domestic cases, 10,570 are male and 12,322 are female, while the gender of the other 10 cases is under investigation. They range in age from under five to above 90 years. Of those domestic cases, 4,515 were reported in New Taipei City, 2,711 in Taichung City, 2,668 in Taipei City, 2,218 in Taoyuan City, 1,971 in Kaohsiung City, 1,659 in Tainan City, 1,132 in Changhua County, 765 in Miaoli County, 592 in Pingtung County, 581 in Hsinchu County, 571 in Yilan County, 564 in Yunlin County, 556 in Hsinchu City, 449 in Chiayi County, 442 in Hualien County, 388 in Nantou County, 335 in Keelung City, 292 in Chiayi City, 223 in Taitung County, 142 in Penghu County, 116 in Kinmen County, and 12 in Lienchiang County.

Regarding the 16 deaths from domestic cases announced today, they were nine men and seven women ranging in age from 50 to above 90 years. They were severe cases.

Regarding the 270 imported cases, they all arrived in Taiwan between July 19 and August 15, 2022.

The CECC reported that a total of 15,492,462 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 10,558,732. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 4,927,754 cases. Of the 4,927,754 confirmed cases, 23,776 are imported; 4,903,924 are domestic; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; 3 are infections on an aircraft; 1 case has an unknown source of infection; 14 cases' sources of infection are being investigated. There have been a cumulative total of 9,473 COVID-19 deaths since 2020; of the 9,473 deaths, 9,458 are from domestic cases and the other 15 are from imported cases.
