Four more imported cases of influenza A (H1N1) confirmed

On June 11, 2009, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced four newly confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1) in Taiwan, which are the 33rd, 34th, 35th, and 36th confirmed cases in Taiwan. Three cases were imported from Thailand and one was imported from the United States.

The three newly confirmed cases imported from Thailand respectively are a female student who went on a graduation trip to Thailand, a male who works nine-to-five and went on a trip to Thailand, and a Thai-born male engineer.On the other hand, the laboratory results have eliminated influenza A (H1N1) infection in students and close contacts of the cases announced on June 9, 2009.

The thirty-third case is a 22-year-old female college student who went on a graduation trip to Thailand from June 3 to June 9, 2009 with a tour group of 21 people. In the morning of June 9, 2009, the case experienced sore throat after waking up.Later in the evening, the case arrived at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport and was detected with an abnormal temperature by the fever screening station in the airport.According to the case, she wore a facemask throughout the flight back to Taiwan.Two other classmates of the case were detected with an abnormal temperature at the airport and they were rushed to the hospital for specimen collection.Influenza A (H1N1) infection was later eliminated in both of them.The other students who went on the trip with the case have all been asked to conduct self-health management as a precaution.

The thirty-forth case is a 26-year-old male who works nine-to-five in Taiwan and went on a trip to Thailand from June 3 to June 8, 2009 with a tour group of 30 people.At around noon of June 8, 2009, the case arrived at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. After returning to Taiwan, the case developed a fever of 39.7℃, running nose, nasal congestion, and cough with phlegm.On June 9, 2009, the case sought medical attention, specimen was collected from the case, and the case was sent to the isolation ward for treatment.Influenza A (H1N1) infection was later confirmed in the case.At the time of writing, none of the tour group members has developed influenza-like symptoms.

The thirty-fifth case is a 30-year-old Thai-born male engineer who works in Taiwan and visited Thailand from May 27 to June 7, 2009.On June 9, 2009, he developed symptoms such as cough and running nose.On June 10, 2009, he experienced fever and sought medical attention on his own.After the case was reported to the health authority, specimen was collected from the case, and the case was sent to the isolation ward for treatment.Influenza A (H1N1) infection was later confirmed in the case. According to the case, he came into contact with a friend who experienced symptoms in Bangkok, Thailand.From May 31 to June 2, 2009, he visited Hua-hin in Thailand.After returning to Taiwan, he only had brief contact with his coworkers.CECC indicated that those close contacts have been asked to conduct self-health management.

The thirty-sixth cases is a 14-year-old American-born boy who arrived in Taiwan from the United States on June 5, 2009.On June 9, 2009, the case developed cough and fever.Immediately, the case sought medical attention at the hospital.After the case was reported to the health authority, specimen was collected from the case, and the case was sent to the isolation ward for treatment.Influenza A (H1N1) infection was later confirmed in the case.Originally, the case planned to leave Taiwan for Australia on June 10, 2009. Due to waiting for the laboratory result, the plan was canceled, and the case is currently following quarantine measures.

CECC has reported the four cases to the World Health Organization (WHO).

On June 11, 2009, WHO called an emergency meeting in response to the ongoing global spread of the influenza A (H1N1) virus.CECC planned to hold a meeting on June 12, 2009 as a response to the WHO’s emergency meeting.
