In response to some countries’ reporting of travelers found positive for COVID-19 after they leave Taiwan, CECC launches investigations and conducts contact tracing

On August 19, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced that Taiwan received a notification from Lao authorities through International Health Regulations (IHR) National Focal Point that a traveler tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) after he had returned to Laos from Taiwan. The CECC stated that the case is a Lao man in his 30s. The Lao man took a COVID-19 test at his own expense in Taiwan on August 10, and he tested negative. The Lao man left Taiwan and landed in South Korea for his transit flight to Laos on August 11. On August 12, he arrived in Laos and underwent COVID-19 testing at the airport. His test result came back positive on August 13. The Lao man didn’t experience any symptoms in Taiwan, and he hasn’t developed symptoms since he returned to Laos. The CECC has launched an investigation into the case and conducted contact tracing.

Regarding the news reports about both Vietnam and Shanghai reporting a case found positive for COVID-19 after their departures from Taiwan, the CECC also announced related information. Regarding the case reported by the Vietnamese authorities, the case is a male Vietnamese migrant worker in his 40s. The Vietnamese migrant worker worked in northern Taiwan and left Taiwan for his home country on August 7. The migrant worker tested negative at the airport. After entry, he was placed in a group quarantine facility in Vietnam where he shared a quarantine room with two other persons who returned to Vietnam from the United States and Japan, respectively. Those two persons developed symptoms on August 12, and then they tested positive for COVID-19. The migrant worker took another COVID-19 test on August 17, and infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case. The CECC and the local health authority have launched an investigation into the Vietnamese migrant worker and conducted contact tracing.

As for the case reported by Shanghai, the CECC will launch an investigation and conduct contact tracing after it obtains more information from Shanghai authorities.
