Taiwan CDC issues travel notice of Level 1: Watch for avian influenza, effective beginning June 28, to all of China, excluding Hong Kong and Macau, encouraging travelers visiting China to practice usual precautions and avoid contact with poultry and birds

Previously, the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (Taiwan CDC) issued a travel notice of Level 2: Alert for avian influenza to Beijing City and a travel notice of Level 1: Watch for avian influenza to the other provinces and cities in China, excluding Hong Kong and Macau. On June 28, 2013,Taiwan CDC updated the travel notice issued for Beijing from Level 2: Alert to Level 1: Watch since no new H7N9 case had been reported in Beijing for 28 consecutive days. Travelers visiting China are urged to practice good personal hygiene and avoid contact with poultry and birds.

At the time of writing, officials from the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) have confirmed a new death in a H7N9 case previously confirmed in Shanghai City. Thus far, an accumulative total of 131 cases of human infections with the avian influenza A(H7N9) virus, including 40 deaths, have occurred in Shanghai (33), Jiangsu Province(27), Zhejiang Province (46), Anhui Province (4), Beijing (2), Henan Province (4), Shandong Province (2), Jiangxi Province (6), Fujian Province (5), and Hunan Province (2).

Taiwan CDC will continue to closely monitor the development of the domestic and international situation, conduct surveillance in animals and inspect poultry vendors for any acts of illegal slaughtering and selling of live poultry at traditional wet markets. Both poultry vendors and the public are urged to cooperate with government policies to ensure public health is safeguarded.

Taiwan CDC once again urges the public to practice good personal hygiene such as washing hands frequently and putting on a mask when coughing, take preventive measures such as avoiding direct contact with poultry and birds or their droppings, avoiding visiting traditional markets with live poultry, consuming only thoroughly cooked poultry and eggs.  If symptoms such as fever and cough develop after returning to Taiwan from areas affected by H7N9 influenza, please put on a surgical mask and seek immediate medical attention.  Moreover, please inform the physician of the recent travel history to facilitate diagnosis and treatment.
