In order to enhance the awareness of HIV/AIDS prevention among students, beginning October 27, 2013, a Rock'n Roll party "Love Rock'n Roll & Fight AIDS" took place at Dream Mall in Kaohsiung City. The exciting performance lasted for over 5 hours, which brought together officials of the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (Taiwan CDC) under the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Department of Health of Kaohsiung City, students and the members of popular music clubs in 15 senior high schools.
Based on statistics compiled by Taiwan CDC, as of September 2013, the cumulative number of reported HIV infections is 25,954, of which 3,732 people reside in Kaohsiung City. In the past four years, 348 young people aged between 15 and 24 were newly diagnosed with HIV infections in Kaohsiung City, accounting for 30.5% of the total new HIV infections during the period. Additionally, unsafe sex was the major cause of those new HIV infections. There is a worrying trend that more and more young people are becoming infected with HIV every year, thus underscoring the importance of HIV/AIDS campaign on campus. In order to raise awareness about HIV-AIDS prevention among adolescents, Taiwan CDC cooperated with several senior high schools to hold three rock concerts for teens respectively in northern, central and southern Taiwan.
At the event, the heavy metal song “Solution” was launched by the two rock bands, FUN4 and io, to stress the best way to protect yourself and your partner against the AIDS virus is to use a condom during sex. The rock singers also told all the young friends that shaking hands or hugging with people infected with HIV/AIDS does not spread the disease, but spreads love and warmth.
In addition to two rock bands, FUN4 and io, students and the members of rock music clubs in 15 senior high schools in Kaohsiung, including Kaohsiung Municipal Haiching Vocational High School of Technology and Commerce (海青工商), Kaohsiung Municipal Sanmin Home Economics & Commerce Vocational High School (三民家商), Kaohsiung Municipal Siaogang Senior High School (小港高中), Kaohsiung Municipal Chungshan Senior High School (中山高中), Chun Shang Industrial and Commercial School (中山工商), Guoguang Laboratory School under NSYSU (中山附中), Kaohsiung Municipal Cianjhen Senior High School (前鎮高中), Kaohsiung Municipal Kaohsiung Girls' Senior High School (高雄女中), Kaohsiung Municipal Kaohsiung Senior High School (高雄中學), Kaohsiung Marine University Vocational High School (高雄海洋科技大學附設五專部), National Feng-Hsin Senior High School (鳯新高中), Kaohsiung Municipal Rueisiang Senior High School (瑞祥高中), Kaohsiung Municipal Gushan Senior High School (鼓山高中), Kaohsiung Municipal Fu Cheng Senior High School (福誠高中) came up on stage to perform enthusiastically one after another. The rock concert continued for over 5 hours. The young singers enjoyed interacting with the audience in various songs and witty prize-giving quizzes.
Individuals can reduce the risk of HIV infection by limiting exposure to risk factors such as unsupervised "house parties", sex parties, having sex with multiple partners or partners of unknown HIV status. If you are having unprotected sex with a partner whose HIV status is unknown, you may need to get tested for HIV every 3 to 6 months. The anonymous HIV screening program "We-Check for our Brave Companions" came to a close on October 31, 2013. Taiwan CDC urges people who have had unprotected sex to get tested for HIV–because early diagnosis and treatment do save lives.
