Statistics show 20-60% of the participants attending drug parties and house parties raided in the previous years are found to be infected with HIV, and 30-80% of the partygoers have sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).Participants of these parties are, in a way, betting on their health because one unprotected sex could bring about undesirable outcomes that people regret for life.Based on the past events, several party participants who were initially tested negative for HIV were later confirmed to have contracted the virus during the follow-up tests.

In the past two years, needle sharing among intravenous drug users was considered the major route of HIV transmission in Taiwan.Nevertheless, the HIV epidemic in Taiwan is gradually brought under reasonable control after the government’s active promotion of harm reduction policies. However, the number of infections through practicing risky sexual behaviors at house parties advertised on the internet and sex parties, and having sex with multiple partners is on the rise.Taiwan CDC stresses that people are more likely to engage in risky sexual behaviors under the influence of illicit drugs, especially when they are in an arousing atmosphere and the power of self-control and self-defense is diminished, thus exposing themselves to the risk environment for HIV transmission.

There are many potential risks at internet-organized parties. Taiwan CDC once again urges the public to participate in healthy and legal activities, and refrain from having unprotected sex.More particularly, do not engage in sex with someone whose sexual history is unknown to prevent contracting STDs due to one-time negligence and temptation.Refuse any sexual contact with sex partners if they fail to guarantee safety, and if they refuse to take any preventive measures against HIV or STD.Further, Taiwan CDC reminds the public to follow the ABC strategy of AIDS prevention: Abstain, Be faithful, and use Condoms. If, however, the A and the B cannot be observed, at least the C-use Condoms, must be followed throughout the entire sexual contact.
