Eleventh imported case of influenza A (H1N1) confirmed; current pandemic alert level in Taiwan remains at phase 3 (yellow light alert)

The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced a newly confirmed imported case of influenza A (H1N1) in Taiwan, which is the 11th confirmed case in Taiwan.The eleventh case is a 19-year-old, Taiwan-born female who currently attends college/university in Massachusetts, the United States. On May 26, 2009, the case returned to Taiwan from Boston, the United States through Chicago and Japan and arrived at Taoyuan International Airport in the evening of May 27, 2009.Upon returning home in Taiwan, the case experienced fever and light cough.At noon the next day, the case sought medical attention and was measured to have a body temperature of 39.7 ℃.After further diagnosis and evaluation, the case was sent to an isolation ward for treatment and specimen collection, and influenza A (H1N1) infection was later confirmed in the case. According to the epidemiological investigation, the case developed symptoms upon arriving in Taiwan.Further, the case indicated that a female passenger who was sitting two rows behind her on her connecting flight from Japan was experiencing influenza-like symptoms such as fever and was taken off the plane by the Japanese quarantine personnel.In addition, an adjacent passenger was coughing during the flight back to Taiwan.Therefore, it is highly likely the 11th case is an imported case.CECC stated that all the close contacts of the case have been traced for further investigation and follow-up.
