CECC confirms 5 more imported cases; cases arrive in Taiwan from the Philippines, India, and the UK

On May 7, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced five new confirmed imported cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. Those five new cases arrived in Taiwan from the Philippines (Cases #1175-1177), India (Case #1178) and the United Kingdom (Case #1179).

Case #1175 is an over 30-year-old male from the Philippines. The Filipino man traveled to Taiwan to work as a sailor on April 20. He visited the hospital to take a self-paid test after completing the quarantine period on May 5. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on May 7.

Case #1176 is an over 20-year-old female migrant worker from the Philippines. The female migrant worker traveled to Taiwan for work on April 7. She was tested twice on April 20 and April 27, and the test results came back negative. Due to work requirements, she visited the hospital to take another self-paid test on May 5. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on May 7 (the CT value was 36, and she tested negative for IgM and positive for IgG antibodies).

Case #1177 is an over 30-year-old male from the Philippines. The Filipino man traveled to Taiwan to work as a fisherman on April 23. He was tested on May 6 before completing the quarantine period, and infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on May 7.

Case #1178 is a Taiwanese man in his 40s. He returned to Taiwan from India on April 23. He experienced a sore throat and cough on April 25. The health authority then arranged for him to seek medical attention and undergo testing on April 28. The test result came back negative. Because he still experienced a sore throat in the following days, the health authority then arranged for him to seek medical attention and undergo testing again. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on May 7.

Case #1179 is a Taiwanese female in her 20s. She returned to Taiwan from the United Kingdom on April 23. She experienced a fever, runny nose, sore throat, cough, and diarrhea between April 30 and May 5. The health authority then arranged for her to seek medical attention and undergo testing on May 5. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on May 7.

The CECC reported that a cumulative total of 213,640 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 211,324. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 1178 cases. Of the 1178 confirmed cases, 1033 are imported; 95 are indigenous; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; 2 are infections on an aircraft; 1 case has unknown sources of infection; 11 cases' sources of infection are being investigated; and 1 case (Case #530) has been removed (Case #530 is not assigned to any patients). Of the confirmed cases, there have been 12 deaths, and 1077 patients have been released from isolation, with the other 89 patients remaining hospitalized in isolation.
