9 more hospitals to provide free anonymous HIV counseling, testing services

In order to more closely meet the needs of the public, the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (Taiwan CDC) has recently expanded anonymous HIV screening service, adding 9 more hospitals to the existing 10 hospitals that provide the service this year. Currently, the 19 hospitals that provide anonymous HIV counseling and testing services in Taiwan include National Taiwan University Hospital, Taipei City Hospital(Branch for Disease Control & Prevention), Taipei Medical University Hospital, National Yang-Ming University Hospital (formerly DOH I-lan Hospital), DOH Tao-Yuan General Hospital, HsinChu Mackay Memorial Hospital, Taichung Veterans General Hospital, China Medical University Hospital, Chung Shan Medical University Hospital, DOH Fong-Yuan Hospital, DOH Nantou Hospital, DOH Chang-Hua hospital, National Taiwan University Hospital Yun-Lin Branch, National Cheng Kung University Hospital, Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital, Kaohsiung Medical University, KaohSiung Veterans General Hospital, E-DA Hospital, Buddhist Tzu Chi General Hospital, and Mennonite Christian Hospital.

Since 2003, to encourage high-risk individuals to undergo voluntary testing for HIV while taking privacy into account, Taiwan CDC has been promoting long-term institution of anonymous screening program in the designated medical care centers to provide free anonymous testing and counseling services to serve the public. During 2003-2007, 26,603 people took the test, and 742 cases were tested positive for HIV, yielding a positive rate of 2.79%. As the number of people who undergo the screening increases every year, Taiwan CDC has increased from 10 hospitals that provide anonymous HIV screening service to 19 hospitals.
