At 5:30pm on November 26, 2009, the Central Epidemic Command Center called an urgent expert meeting to discuss the association of the death of a 9-year-old boy who resided in southern Taiwan and the pandemic influenza A (H1N1) vaccine.The conference was convened by the Deputy Minister of Health Shen-Chwen Chang.Participants include Superintendent Yan-Tsou Lin of Chang Gung Children's Hospital, Professor Ping-Ing Lee of National Taiwan University Hospital, and Director Jian-Wei Liu of Department of Internal Medicine at Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital who is also the attending physician of the 9-year-old boy.At the meeting, the case’s symptom development, clinical manifestation and laboratory data were discussed to determine the cause of his death.The experts concluded that the case died of shock caused by bacterial infection, which is not related to the pandemic influenza A (H1N1) vaccine.
CECC stressed that the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (Taiwan CDC) will continue to closely monitor the safety of the vaccine to ensure the health of the people in Taiwan.
