CDC releases latest surveillance data on notifiable infectious diseases in Taiwan (June, 2008).

According to statistics compiled by the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (Taiwan CDC), 2347 cases of notifiable infectious diseases were confirmed among patients who had illness onset in June, 2008. During the same period in 2008, 2338 cases of notifiable infectious diseases were confirmed among patients who had illness onset with an infectious disease.
None of the 2347 cases confirmed in June this year was infected with a Category 1 or Category 5 notifiable infectious disease. On the other hand, 82 cases were confirmed with a Category 2 notifiable infectious disease. Further, the majority of the cases, 18 out of 82, were infected with dengue fever, followed by 15 cases of amoebiasis, and 12 cases of hepatitis A. In addition, 2017 cases were infected with a Category 3 disease and 1092 out of the 2017 cases were infected with tuberculosis, constituting the highest case number in this category, followed by 566 cases of syphilis, and 137 cases of enteroviruses infection with severe complications. Moreover, 91 cases were infected with a Category 4 disease and 47 out of the 91 cases were infected with invasive pneumococcal disease, constituting the highest case number in this category, followed by 36 cases of scrub typhus, and 3 cases of Q fever. Furthermore, 135 cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection were confirmed.
In June, 39 confirmed cases of infectious diseases were imported. Dengue fever infection was the most common with a case number of 17, followed by 7 cases of shigellosis, 5 cases of amoebiasis, 2 case of typhoid fever, and so on.
When compared to the average case numbers for the month of June in the previous three years, the average case numbers of the following diseases exceeded the average values from the previous three years: amoebiasis, typhoid fever, enteroviruses infection with severe complications, etc.
