On May 21, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced 315 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. Of the 315 new cases, 312 are indigenous and the other three are imported.

The CECC pointed out that of the 312 indigenous cases, 170 are men and the other 142 are women ranging in ages from under 5 to 99 years old. They began to develop symptoms/were tested between May 8 and May 20. Of 312 individuals, 144 reside in New Taipei City (37 in Banqiao District); 127 in Taipei City (60 in Wanhua District); 13 in Taoyuan City; 9 in Keelung City; 5 in Taichung City; 5 in Changhua County; 4 in Kaohsiung City; 2 in Yilan County; 1 each in Pingtung County, Nantou County and Yunlin County.

The CECC also confirmed 3 imported cases today, and the cases arrived in Taiwan from the US, the Philippines and Canada.

Case #2974 is an American woman in her 50s. She arrived in Taiwan from the US on April 28. She was tested for COVID-19 on May 20, and infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on May 21.

Case #3149 is a Canadian man in his 40s. He arrived in Taiwan from Canada on May 19. He was tested for COVID-19 on May 20, and infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on May 21.

Case #3038 is an over 30-year-old male sailor from the Philippines. He arrived in Taiwan from the Philippines on May 5. He visited the hospital to take a self-paid test on May 20, after completing the quarantine period. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on May 21.

The CECC reported that a cumulative total of 315,592 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 280,916. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 3,139 cases. Of the 3,139 confirmed cases, 1,106 are imported; 1,980 are indigenous; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; 2 are infections on an aircraft; 1 case has unknown sources of infection; 14 cases' sources of infection are being investigated; and 9 cases (Case #530, Case #1589, Case #1676, Case #1591, Case #1886, Case #2067, Case #2068, Case #2528 and Case #2530) have been removed (those case numbers are not assigned to any patients). Of the confirmed cases, there have been 15 deaths.
