To further improve the quality of sexually transmitted disease (STD) care services and encourage STD patients to seek prompt treatment, the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (Taiwan CDC) has asked relevant medical associations to assist willing specialists in treating STD patients and recommend STD friendly physicians to the general public since 2010.As of the end of 2010, a total of 385 specialists were recommended.A list of recommended STD friendly clinics and physicians specialized in urology, dermatology, family medicine, infectious disease and obstetrics and gynecology, is available on the following website: http://www.cdc.gov.tw/mp.asp?mp=220 .

According to the case report data compiled by Taiwan CDC, the number of syphilis cases reported increased from 5,205 in 2004 to 6,688 in 2009, reflecting a 30% increase over the past five years. On the other hand, the number of gonorrhea cases reported increased from 1,980 in 2004 to 2,137 in 2009, reflecting an 8% increase over the past five years. The data shows that the number of people infected with STDs is on the rise as the years go by.

Nevertheless, most people shy away from STD treatment. On top of that, most medical care institutions are inadequately equipped to satisfy the needs of STD patients. Therefore, most people are not used to seeking medical attention at medical care institutions when they have STDs and tend to purchase over-the-counter drugs to self-treat their symptoms or ignore their symptoms completely.Ignoring STD symptoms is dangerous and undesirable. The dangers of ignoring STD symptoms include worsening of the symptoms and passing the infection to other people.Further, people who leave their STDs untreated place them at risk for HIV/AIDS.
