On August 17, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced 24,873 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. Of the 24,873 new cases, 24,669 are domestic and 204 are imported. The CECC announced 33 deaths today.

Regarding the 24,669 new domestic cases, 11,199 are male and 13,465 are female, while the gender of the other five cases is under investigation. They range in age from under five to above 90 years. Of those domestic cases, 5,073 were reported in New Taipei City, 3,054 in Taipei City, 2,966 in Taichung City, 2,793 in Taoyuan City, 2,015 in Kaohsiung City, 1,669 in Tainan City, 982 in Changhua County, 726 in Hsinchu County, 724 in Hsinchu City, 655 in Pingtung County, 648 in Miaoli County, 540 in Yunlin County, 531 in Yilan County, 465 in Hualien County, 423 in Nantou County, 415 in Keelung City, 338 in Chiayi County, 234 in Taitung County, 234 in Chiayi City, 94 in Penghu County, 81 in Kinmen County, and nine in Lienchiang County.

Regarding the 33 deaths from domestic cases announced today, they were 19 men and 14 women ranging in age from 50 to above 90 years. They were severe cases.

Regarding the 204 imported cases, they all arrived in Taiwan between July 19 and August 16, 2022.

The CECC reported that a total of 15,541,135 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 10,580,709. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 4,952,570 cases. Of the 4,952,570 confirmed cases, 23,982 are imported; 4,928,534 are domestic; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; 3 are infections on an aircraft; 1 case has an unknown source of infection; 14 cases' sources of infection are being investigated. There have been a cumulative total of 9,506 COVID-19 deaths since 2020; of the 9,506 deaths, 9,491 are from domestic cases and the other 15 are from imported cases.
