On April 27, 2009, a 32-year-old male from Taoyuan county dialed the toll-free consultation and case-reporting hotline, 1922, operated by Taiwan CDC, to inquire about his influenza-like symptoms, including runny nose, cough, and sore throat, that he experienced after attending a conference in Mexico from April 19 to 22, 2009 and returning to Taiwan from Canada on April 24, 2009.Since his symptoms persisted, he called 1922 to consult and seek appropriate medical advice. After receiving his call, the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (Taiwan CDC) contacted the Public Health Bureau of the Taoyuan County Government to arrange for the case to seek medical assistance at a hospital under the Infectious Disease Prevention Network in the northern Taiwan.Besides collecting respiratory swabs from the case, he was placed in a negative pressure isolation room for further treatment. The laboratory test result was negative and eliminated infection with influenza A (H1N1) in the case.
Taiwan CDC urges travelers planning to visit areas affected by the outbreak, including Mexico and the southwestern part of the United States, to check the relevant epidemic information posted on the Taiwan CDC web site, practice hand hygiene and respiratory hygiene/cough etiquette, and avoid contacts with suspected patients. If influenza-like symptoms, including fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, nausea, and diarrhea, develop upon returning to Taiwan, please seek medical attention immediately and inform the doctor of the recent travel history. For more information about swine influenza A (H1N1) such as international outbreaks and prevention measures, please visit the Taiwan CDC web site at http://www.cdc.gov.tw or dial the toll-free hotline, 1922, operated by Taiwan CDC.
