On December 17, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced 15,625 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. Of the 15,625 new cases, 15,464 are domestic and 161 are imported. The CECC announced 40 deaths today.

Regarding the 15,464 new domestic cases, 6,974 are male and 8,479 are female, while the gender of the other 11 cases is under investigation. They range in age from under five to above 90 years. Of those domestic cases, 3,037 were reported in New Taipei City, 1,947 in Taichung City, 1,768 in Taoyuan City, 1,766 in Kaohsiung City, 1,566 in Taipei City, 1,194 in Tainan City, 740 in Changhua County, 481 in Hsinchu County, 456 in Hsinchu City, 396 in Pingtung County, 379 in Miaoli County, 353 in Yunlin County, 232 in Chiayi County, 223 in Yilan County, 219 in Nantou County, 182 in Keelung City, 159 in Chiayi City, 143 in Hualien County, 93 in Taitung County, 87 in Kinmen County, 39 in Penghu County, and four in Lienchiang County.

Regarding the 40 deaths from domestic cases announced today, they were 29 men and 11 women ranging in age from 30 to above 90 years. They were severe cases.

Regarding the 161 imported cases, they all arrived in Taiwan between November 17 and December 16, 2022.

The CECC reported that a total of 20,429,834 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 11,865,975. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 8,562,931 cases. Of the 8,562,931 confirmed cases, 38,778 are imported; 8,524,099 are domestic; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; 3 are infections on an aircraft; 1 case has an unknown source of infection; 14 cases' sources of infection are being investigated. There have been a cumulative total of 14,860 COVID-19 deaths since 2020; of the 14,860 deaths, 14,843 are from domestic cases and the other 17 are from imported cases.
