CECC confirms 4 more imported COVID-19 cases; cases arrive in Taiwan from India, Indonesia, Myanmar, and the US

On December 19, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced four new confirmed imported cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. Those four new cases arrived in Taiwan from India, Indonesia, Myanmar, and the United States.

Case #761 is an over 20-year-old male fishing boat worker from Indonesia. He came to Taiwan to work on December 1. The man hasn’t developed any symptoms since arrival. After completing the quarantine period on December 15, his employment agency arranged for him to take a self-paid COVID-19 test on December 17. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on December 19.

Case #762 is an over 30-year-old male ship crewmember from Myanmar. He traveled to Taiwan to work on December 2. The ship crewmember hasn’t developed any symptoms since arrival. After completing the quarantine period on December 17, his employment agency arranged for him to take a self-paid COVID-19 test. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on December 19.

Case #763 is a Taiwanese woman in her 20s. The woman took a flight back to Taiwan from the United States on December 7, and returned to Taiwan on December 9. During the quarantine period, she began to develop a productive cough and an abnormal sense of smell on December 14. The health authority arranged for her to seek medical attention and to be tested on December 16. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on December 19.

Case #764 is an over 30-year-old male ship crewmember from India. The Indian man traveled to Taiwan to work on October 21. He hasn’t developed any symptoms since arrival. After completing the quarantine period on November 5, the Indian man had been working on the ship. The company for which he worked arranged for him to take a self-paid COVID-19 test on December 16. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on December 19 (he tested positive for antibodies). He hasn’t developed any symptoms since arrival, and he is currently hospitalized in isolation for treatment.

The CECC reported that a cumulative total of 119,164 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 116,802. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 763 cases. Of the 763 confirmed cases, 671 are imported; 55 are indigenous; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; 1 case has unknown sources of infection; and 1 case (Case #530) has been removed (Case #530 is not assigned to any patients). Of the confirmed cases, there have been 7 deaths, and 625 patients have been released from isolation, with the other 131 patients remaining hospitalized in isolation.
