Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 42


October 30, 2012--As of October 30, 2012, 151 cases (including 2 deaths) of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012; two were caused by CA 2, one was caused by Echo 6, one was caused by EV71 and CA2 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB4 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB3 co-infection and the others were caused by EV71. In 2011, there were 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications; one case was caused by CA10 and the others were caused by EV71. 10 cases confirmed in 2012 aged 10-17 years old. The other 141 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) Fig.1(pdf file) displays the geographical distribution of the cases according to their residence.

Two cases were confirmed in Week 43 (October 24 to October 30). They are a 2- year-old girl in New Taipei City, a 10-month-old boy in Tainan City. Their infections were all caused by EV71 and they had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
