Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 2


January 17, 2012--As of January 17, 2012, 2 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012. In 2011, 57 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC. These cases are aged below 10 years (See Table 1(pdf file)) and reside in the northern, central, eastern and southern areas of Taiwan. (See Fig. 1(pdf file))

Two cases were confirmed in Week 2 (January 11 to January 17). They are 20-month-old boy from Taichung City and 15-month-old boy from Tainan City. Their infections were all caused by EV71. The 20-month-old boy from Taichung City was still in intensive care unit, and the boy from Tainan City had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
