Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 17


May 8, 2012--As of May 8, 2012, 34 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012. In 2011, 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC. Two cases confirmed in 2012 are 11 and 12 years old. The other 32 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) They reside in the northern, central, eastern and southern areas of Taiwan. (See Fig. 1(pdf file))

Four cases were confirmed in Week 18 (May 2 to May 8). They are 2-year-old boy from New Taipei City, 2-year-old boy from Taichung City, 23-month-old girl from Hsinchu County, and 8-month-old boy from Kaohsiung City. Their infections were all caused by EV71. The 23-month-old girl from Hsinchu County was still in intensive care unit and the rest of them had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
