Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 29


July 31, 2012--As of July 31, 2012, 117 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012; two were caused by CA 2, one was caused by Echo 6, one was caused by EV71 and CA2 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB4 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB3 co-infection and the others were caused by EV71. In 2011, there were 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications; one case was caused by CA10 and the others were caused by EV71. Seven cases confirmed in 2012 aged 10-14 years old. The other 110 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) Fig.1(pdf file) displays the geographical distribution of the cases according to their residence.

Eight cases were confirmed in Week 30 (July 25 to July 31). They are a 15-month-old boy in Taoyuan County, a 3-year-old girl in Nantou County, a 4-year-old boy in Yunlin County, a 8-month-old boy in Kaohsiung City, a 19-month-old boy and 12-year-old girl in New Taipei City, a 22-month-old boy and 3-year-old girl in Taichung City. Their infections were all caused by EV71. The 15-month-old boy in Taoyuan County was still in intensive care unit and the rest of them had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
