Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 26


July 10, 2012--As of July 10, 2012, 96 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012; two were caused by CA 2, one was caused by Echo 6, one was caused by EV71 and CA2 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB4 co-infection and the others were caused by EV71. In 2011, there were 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications; one case was caused by CA10 and the others were caused by EV71. Five cases confirmed in 2012 aged 10-13 years old. The other 91 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) Fig.1(pdf file) displays the geographical distribution of the cases according to their residence.

Seven cases were confirmed in Week 27 (July 4 to July 10). They are a 6-year-old boy in Miaoli County, a 6-year-old girl in Hsinchu City, a 4-year-old boy in Chiayi City, a 1-month-old girl in Tainan City, a 6-month-old boy in Kaohsiung City, a 17-month-old boy and a 13-year-old boy in Taipei City. Their infections were all caused by EV71. The 6-year-old boy in Miaoli County was still in intensive care unit and the rest of them had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
