Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 32


August 21, 2012--As of August 21, 2012, 135 cases (including 2 deaths) of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012; two were caused by CA 2, one was caused by Echo 6, one was caused by EV71 and CA2 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB4 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB3 co-infection and the others were caused by EV71. In 2011, there were 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications; one case was caused by CA10 and the others were caused by EV71. 10 cases confirmed in 2012 aged 10-17 years old. The other 125 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) Fig.1(pdf file) displays the geographical distribution of the cases according to their residence.

Five cases were confirmed in Week 33 (August 15 to August 21). They are a 14-year-old boy in Miaoli County, a 5-month-old boy in Taichung City, a 3-year-old boy in Kaohsiung City, a 7-month-old girl and a 17-year-old boy in New Taipei City. Their infections were all caused by EV71. The 7-month-old girl in New Taipei City was still in intensive care unit and the rest of them had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
