Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 13


April 10, 2012--As of April 10, 2012, 24 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012. In 2011, 58 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC. The 24 cases confirmed in 2012 are aged below 10 years (See Table 1(pdf file)) and reside in the northern, central, eastern and southern areas of Taiwan. (See Fig. 1(pdf file))

Three cases were confirmed in Week 14 (April 4 to April 10). They are 17-month-old boy from Taichung City, 5-year-old girl from Yilan County, and 4-month-old girl from Tainan City. Their infections were all caused by EV71. The 4-month-old girl from Tainan City was still in general hospital ward and the rest of them had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
