Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 4


February 7, 2012--As of February 7, 2012, 10 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012. In 2011, 58 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC. These cases are aged below 10 years (See Table 1(pdf file)) and reside in the northern, central, eastern and southern areas of Taiwan. (See Fig. 1(pdf file))

Three cases were confirmed in Week 5 (February 1 to February 7). They are 18-month-old boy from New Taipei City, 6-year-old boy from Taoyuan County, 13-month-old boy from Kinmen County. Their infections were all caused by EV71. The 18-month-old boy from New Taipei City was still in general hospital ward and the rest of them had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
