Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 16


May 1, 2012--As of May 1, 2012, 30 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012. In 2011, 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC. Two cases confirmed in 2012 are 11 and 12 years old. The other 28 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) They reside in the northern, central, eastern and southern areas of Taiwan. (See Fig. 1(pdf file))

Three cases were confirmed in Week 17 (April 25 to May 1). They are 11-year-old boy from New Taipei City, 2-year-old girl from Taichung City and 13-month-old boy from Tainan City. Their infections were all caused by EV71 and they had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
