Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 43


November 6, 2012--As of November 6, 2012, 152 cases (including 2 deaths) of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012; two were caused by CA2, one was caused by Echo6, three were caused by EV71 and CA2 co-infection, EV71 and CB4 co-infection and EV71 and CB3 co-infection respectively, and the others were caused by EV71. In 2011, there were 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications; one case was caused by CA10 and the others were caused by EV71. 10 cases confirmed in 2012 aged 10-17 years old. The other 142 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) Fig.1(pdf file) displays the geographical distribution of the cases according to their residence.

One case was confirmed in Week 44 (October 31 to November 6). This case is a 9-month-old girl in Nantou County. Her infection was caused by EV71 and she was still in intensive care unit. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
