Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 22


June 12, 2012--As of June 12, 2012, 65 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012; one case was caused by Echo 6 and the others were caused by EV71. In 2011, there were 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications; one case was caused by CA10 and the others were caused by EV71. Four cases confirmed in 2012 aged 10-12 years old. The other 61 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) Fig.1(pdf file) displays the geographical distribution of the cases according to their residence.

Five cases were confirmed in Week 23 (June 6 to June 12). They are 3-year-old boy from Tainan City, 3-month-old boy and 12-month-old girl from New Taipei City, 9-month-old boy and 2-year-old boy from Miaoli County. Their infections were all caused by EV71 and they had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
