Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 21


June 5, 2012--As of June 5, 2012, 60 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012; one case was caused by Echo 6 and the others were caused by EV71. In 2011, there were 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications; one case was caused by CA10 and the others were caused by EV71. Four cases confirmed in 2012 aged 10-12 years old. The other 56 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) Fig.1(pdf file) displays the geographical distribution of the cases according to their residence.

Seven cases were confirmed in Week 22 (May 30 to June 5). They are 4-month-old girl, 7-month-old boy, and 19-month-old boy from Tainan City, 7-year-old girl from New Taipei City, 3-year-old boy from Hsinchu County, 3-year-old girl from Taichung City and 2-year-old girl from Taoyuan County. Their infections were all caused by EV71. The 7-year-old girl from New Taipei City was still in general hospital ward, the 3-year-old girl from Taichung City was still in intensive care unit and the others had been discharged.
