Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 27


July 17, 2012--As of July 17, 2012, 102 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012; two were caused by CA 2, one was caused by Echo 6, one was caused by EV71 and CA2 co-infection, one was caused by EV71 and CB4 co-infection and the others were caused by EV71. In 2011, there were 59 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications; one case was caused by CA10 and the others were caused by EV71. Five cases confirmed in 2012 aged 10-13 years old. The other 97 cases are aged below 10 years. (See Table 1(pdf file)) Fig.1(pdf file) displays the geographical distribution of the cases according to their residence.

Six cases were confirmed in Week 28 (July 11 to July 17). They are a 6-month-old boy in Kaohsiung City, a 11-month-old boy in Taoyuan County, a 19-month-old boy in New Taipei City, a 11-month-old boy in Taichung City, a 11-month-old girl and a 3-year-old boy in Tainan City. Their infections were all caused by EV71. The 11-month-old boy in Taichung City was still in general hospital ward and the rest of them had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
