Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 3


January 31, 2012--As of January 31, 2012, 7 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012. In 2011, 58 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC. These cases are aged below 10 years (See Table 1(pdf file)) and reside in the northern, central, eastern and southern areas of Taiwan. (See Fig. 1(pdf file))

Six cases were confirmed in Week 3-4 (January 18 to January 31). They are 21-month-old girl and 4-month-old girl from Tainan City, 2-year-old girl from Hsinchu City, 8-year-old girl from Taipei City, 4-year-old boy from New Taipei City, and 2-year-old boy from Chiayi City. Their infections were all caused by EV71, and they had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
