Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 27


July 16, 2013--As of July 16, 2013, 6 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2013; three cases were caused by Coxsackie A6 (CA6), two cases were caused by Enterovirus 71 (EV71) and one case was caused by Echovirus 30. One case was 5 years old and the other 5 cases were below 2 years old. (See Table 1) Fig.1 displays the geographical distribution of these cases according to their residence. In 2012, there were 153 cases (including 2 deaths) of enterovirus infection with severe complications; among 153 confirmed cases there were 149 cases caused by EV71.

Two cases were confirmed in Week 28 (July 10 to July 16). One is a 4-day-old newborn caused by Echovirus 30 and lived in New Taipei City; he was still in intensive care unit. The other one is a 5-year-old boy caused by EV71 and lived in Taoyuan County; he had been discharged. (See Fig. 2)
