Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 18


May 14, 2013--As of May 14, 2013, 3 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2013; these cases were all caused by Coxsackie A6 (CA6) and aged below 2 years. (See Table 1) Fig.1 displays the geographical distribution of these cases according to their residence. In 2012, there were 153 cases (including 2 deaths) of enterovirus infection with severe complications; among 153 confirmed cases there were 149 cases caused by EV71.

One case was confirmed in Week 19 (May 8 to May 14). This case is a 17-month-old boy in Hualien County. His infection was caused by CA6 and he had been discharged. (See Fig. 2)
