27 May 2008 Update - Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 1


27 May 2008--As of May 27, 2008, 113 case have been confirmed (with 4 deaths), while 1 confirmed fatal case was reported, during the same period in 2007. Among 113 confirmed cases, 14 cases were still hospitalized (11 were in ICU and 3 were in general hospital wards), 95 cases were discharged, and 4 cases had died. The majority of the confirmed cases are aged between 1 and 2 years (See Table 1(pdf file)), and most are located in the southern areas of Taiwan, with the highest case number reported from Kaohsiung County. (See Fig. 1(pdf file)) The outbreak is still growing and is estimated to peak in June.

Between May 21 and May 27, 2008, 20 cases were newly confirmed. The 20 newly confirmed cases are all caused by EV71, and as of May 27, 7 cases were hospitalized (5 were in ICU and 2 were in general hospital wards), 11 cases were discharged, and 2 cases had died. The majority of the cases are male (11 cases), and the rest are female (9 cases). The cases are all aged below 10, and 15 cases are aged around or below 2. Each 4 cases were reported from Tainan City, Tainan County, and Changhwa County, each 2 were from Taitung County and Kaohsiung County, each 1 was from Maioli County, Kaohsiung City, Pingtung County and Taoyuan County.(See Fig. 2(pdf file))
