08 July 2008 Update - Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 7


8 July 2008--As of July 8, 2008, 311 enterovirus infection with severe complications cases have been reported and confirmed. Among these confirmed cases, 31 cases were still hospitalized (21 were in ICU and 10 were in general hospital wards), 270 cases were discharged, and 10 cases had died. The majority of the confirmed cases are aged between 1 and 2 years (See Table 1(pdf file)), and most are located in the southern areas of Taiwan, with the highest case number reported from Tainan County. (See Fig. 1(pdf file)) The outbreak peaked at the week 25 and now is slowing down.

During week 27 (July 2 to July 8), 33 cases were newly confirmed. The majority of the newly confirmed cases are caused by EV71 (27 cases), 4 cases were Coxsackie A2, 2 case was Non-polio enterovirus infection, and as of July 8, 13 cases were hospitalized (8 were in ICU and 5 were in general hospital wards), 20 cases were discharged. The majority of the cases are male (22 cases), and the rest are female (11 cases). The majority of the cases are aged below 5 (27 cases), and 15 cases are aged around or below 2. 8 cases were reported from Tainan County, each 4 cases were reported from Taipei City and Taipei County, 3 cases were reported from Chiayi County, and each 2 cases were reported from Taichung County, Changhwa County, Yunlin County and Kaohsiung County. Each 1 case was reported from Taoyuan County, Hsinchu City, Taichung County, Nantou County, Tainan City and Hwalien County. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
