14 January 2014 update- Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Week 2


January 14, 2014--As of January 14, 2014, no case of enterovirus infection with severe complications has been confirmed in 2014. In 2013, 12 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications (including 1 death caused by Echovirus 30) had been confirmed by Taiwan CDC; these cases were caused by Enterovirus 71 (EV71, 7 cases), Coxsackie A6 (CA6, 3 cases), Coxsackie A5 (CA5, 1 case) and Echovirus 30 (Echo 30, 1 case), respectively. One case was 34 years old and the other 11 cases were below 6 years old (Table 1). Figure 1 displays the geographical distribution of these cases according to their residence.

One severe case was confirmed in Week 2 (January 8 to January 14, Fig. 2). The case was a 3-year-old boy living in Taipei City; he was sick in December, 2013 due to EV71 infection and had been discharged.
