20 May 2014 update- Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Week 20


May 20, 2014--As of May 20, 2014, 2 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications have been confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2014; these cases were caused by Coxsackie A2 and Enterovirus 71 (EV71), respectively. They were below 3 years old (Table 1). Figure 1 displays the geographical distribution of these cases according to their residence. In 2013, there were 12 cases (including 1 death) of enterovirus infection with severe complications; among 12 confirmed cases there were 7 cases caused by EV71.

One severe case was confirmed in Week 20 (May 14 to May 20, Fig. 2). The case was a 2-year-old boy living in Taichung City; he was infected by EV71 and was recovering well.
