21 October 2014 update- Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan Week 42


October 21, 2014--As of October 21, 2014, 6 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications (including 1 death) have been confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2014; these cases were caused by Coxsackie A2, Coxsackie A5, Coxsackie A16, Coxsackie B5, Echo 11 and Enterovirus 71 (EV71), respectively. They were all below 3 years old (Table 1). Figure 1 displays the geographical distribution of these cases according to their residence. In 2013, there were 12 cases (including 1 death) of enterovirus infection with severe complications; among them there were 7 cases caused by EV71.

One severe case was confirmed in Week 42 (October 15 to October 21, Fig. 2). The case was a 7 days old newborn baby boy; he was infected by Coxsackie B5 and had been discharged.
