Enterovirus Infection with Severe Complications in Taiwan - Update 52


January 3, 2012--As of January 3, 2012, no case of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC in 2012. In 2011, 55 cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications had been reported and confirmed by Taiwan CDC. These cases are aged below 10 years (See Table 1(pdf file)) and reside in the northern, central, eastern and southern areas of Taiwan. (See Fig. 1(pdf file))

In the final week of 2011, 5 cases were newly confirmed. They are 8-year-old girl, 15-month-old boy, and 2-year-old boy from Tainan City, 2-year-old boy from Changhua County, and 22-month-old girl from Taichung City. Their infections were all caused by EV71, and they had been discharged. (See Fig. 2(pdf file))
