The early 21st century emerging epidemic - Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) has taken the whole world by storm. Taiwan could not be spared from this global catastrophe. SARS has tremendous impact on this country in the medical, social and economical aspects. This unknown enemy challenged the disease control systems in all countries. The emergence of this disease posed several crucial questions such as: “What initiates SARS? Bacteria, viruses, or other pathogens?” “How does SARS spread? Through airborne transmission?” “How is SARS different from other respiratory diseases?” “How is a SARS case diagnosed accurately?”, and “What is the most effective treatment for SARS”. Scientists all of the world have proposed various hypotheses trying to answer the aforementioned questions. Simultaneously, valuable experiences have been acquired from testing their theories about SARS.
