CECC confirms 287 indigenous cases and 3 imported cases and retroactively adds 170 cases to total for last week


On May 23, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced 290 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. Of the 290 new cases, 287 are indigenous and the other three (Case #4023, Case #4227 and Case #4228) are imported. Furthermore, the CECC retroactively added 170 cases to the total number of COVID-19 cases calculated over the past week. The CECC also announced six deaths (Case #1912, Case #2384, Case #2483, Case #2986, Case #3304 and Case #3417) today.

The CECC pointed out that of the 287 indigenous cases, 138 are men and the other 149 are women ranging in ages from under 5 to 99 years old. They began to develop symptoms/were tested between May 6 and May 22. Regarding those indigenous cases, New Taipei City reported most cases, at 142 (32 in Banqiao District), and Taipei City had the second highest number, at 77 (38 in Wanhua District). Taoyuan City reported 23 cases; Pingtung County and Nantou County reported 8 each; Yilan County reported 6; Keelung City, Taichung City and Changhua County reported 5 each; Tainan City reported 2; Hualien County, Chiayi City, Chiayi County, Hsinchu County, Hsinchu City and Yulin County reported 1 each. 

Of the 170 cases retroactively added to the tally for the past week, 84 are men and the other 86 are women ranging in ages from under 5 to 89 years old. They began to develop symptoms/were tested between April 25 and May 22. Regarding the 170 cases, Taipei City reported most cases, at 88 (48 in Wanhua District), and New Taipei City had the second highest number, at 73 (17 in Banqiao District). Changhua County reported 6 cases; Yilan County, Hsinchu City and Yulin County reported 1 each.

Regarding the six deaths, they are five men (Case #1912, Case #2384, Case #2986, Case #3304 and Case #3417) and one woman (Case #2483) between 50 and 89 years old.

Regarding the three new imported cases, Case #4023 is an over 20-year-old male fisherman from Indonesia. He came to Taiwan from his home country for work on May 8. He was tested on May 21 before completing the quarantine period, and infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on May 23.

Case #4227 is an over 40-year-old male migrant worker from the Philippines. The male migrant worker traveled to Taiwan for work on May 7. He took a self-paid test on May 22 after completing the quarantine period. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on May 23.

Case #4228 is an over 40-year-old male from Denmark. He was diagnosed with COVID-10 in March in Denmark. He traveled to Taiwan from Denmark for work on April 17. As he planned to leave Taiwan, he took a self-paid test on May 22. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on May 23 (the CT value was 30).

The CECC reported that a cumulative total of 351,999 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 312,689. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 4,322 cases. Of the 4,322 confirmed cases, 1,111 are imported; 3,158 are indigenous; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; 2 are infections on an aircraft; 1 case has unknown sources of infection; 14 cases' sources of infection are being investigated; and 9 cases (Case #530, Case #1589, Case #1676, Case #1591, Case #1886, Case #2067, Case #2068, Case #2528 and Case #2530) have been removed (those case numbers are not assigned to any patients). Of the confirmed cases, there have been 23 deaths.
