On January 9, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced 17,318 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. Of the 17,318 new cases, 16,902 are domestic and 416 are imported. The CECC announced 40 deaths today.

Regarding the 16,902 new domestic cases, 7,757 are male and 9,124 are female, while the gender of the other 21 cases is under investigation. They range in age from under five to above 90 years. Of those domestic cases, 3,299 were reported in New Taipei City, 2,290 in Taichung City, 1,987 in Taoyuan City, 1,925 in Kaohsiung City, 1,753 in Taipei City, 1,309 in Tainan City, 763 in Changhua County, 524 in Hsinchu County, 420 in Miaoli County, 407 in Hsinchu City, 342 in Yunlin County, 334 in Pingtung County, 284 in Keelung City, 264 in Nantou County, 251 in Chiayi County, 242 in Yilan County, 159 in Hualien County, 149 in Chiayi City, 89 in Kinmen County, 65 in Taitung County, 41 in Penghu County, and five in Lienchiang County.

Regarding the 40 deaths from domestic cases announced today, they were 24 men and 16 women ranging in age from 40 to above 90 years. They were severe cases.

Regarding the 416 imported cases, they all arrived in Taiwan between December 9, 2022, and January 8, 2023.

The CECC reported that a total of 21,052,231 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 11,977,605. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 9,072,505 cases. Of the 9,072,505 confirmed cases, 43,032 are imported; 9,029,419 are domestic; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; 3 are infections on an aircraft; 1 case has an unknown source of infection; 14 cases' sources of infection are being investigated. There have been a cumulative total of 15,582 COVID-19 deaths since 2020; of the 15,582 deaths, 15,563 are from domestic cases and the other 19 are from imported cases.
