CECC confirms 6 more imported COVID-19 cases; cases arrive in Taiwan from Egypt, the Philippines, Indonesia and the US


On January 11, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced six new confirmed imported cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. Among the six new cases, three arrived in Taiwan from Egypt (Cases #830-832), one arrived from the Philippines (Case #833), one traveled from Indonesia (Case #834) and the other one (Case #835) traveled from the United States.

Cases #830-832 are an Egyptian male in his teens, an Egyptian female in her teens, and an Egyptian female in her 30s, respectively. The three Egyptian nationals are relatives of Case #825, and they all arrived in Taiwan on January 5, 2021. They all experienced dizziness, a runny noses, and a sore throat on January 7. The health bureau then arranged for them to be tested for COVID-19. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on January 11.

Case #833 is an over 40-year-old female migrant worker from the Philippines. The Philippine migrant worker traveled to Taiwan on December 20, 2020. She hasn't experienced any symptoms since arrival. The female migrant worker was tested for COVID-19 on January 2, 2021, before completing the quarantine period, and the test result came back negative. Her labor broker then arranged for her to take a self-paid test on January 8 during the self-health management period. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on January 11.

Case #834 is an over 20-year-old fisherman from Indonesia. The Indonesian fisherman traveled to Taiwan on December 25, 2020. He hasn't developed any symptoms since arrival. He was tested for COVID-19 on January 7, 2021, before completing the quarantine period, and the test result came back negative. His labor broker arranged for him to take a self-paid test on January 9. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on January 11.

Case #835 is a Taiwanese man in his 30s. He traveled to the United States to visit his relatives in the second half of November 2020, and returned to Taiwan on January 3, 2021. The man briefly experienced a fever on January 4 and developed an abnormal sense of smell and taste on January 8. The health bureau arranged for him to seek medical attention and undergo COVID-19 testing. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on January 11.

The CECC reported that a cumulative total of 132,023 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 130,016. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 834 cases. Of the 834 confirmed cases, 739 are imported; 56 are indigenous; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; 2 are infections on an aircraft; 1 case has unknown sources of infection; and 1 case (Case #530) has been removed (Case #530 is not assigned to any patients). Of the confirmed cases, there have been 7 deaths, and 726 patients have been released from isolation, with the other 101 patients remaining hospitalized in isolation.
