CECC confirms 334 indigenous cases and 5 imported cases and retroactively adds 256 cases to total for last week


On May 24, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced 339 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. Of the 339 new cases, 334 are indigenous and the other five are imported. Among the five imported cases, three arrived from India; one arrived from the Philippines, and one arrived from Nepal. Furthermore, the CECC retroactively added 256 cases to the total number of COVID-19 cases calculated over the past week. A total of 595 cases were recorded. The CECC also announced six deaths today.

The CECC pointed out that of the 334 indigenous cases, 157 are men and the other 177 are women ranging in ages from under 5 to 89 years old. They began to develop symptoms/were tested between May 10 and May 23. Regarding those indigenous cases, New Taipei City reported most cases, at 177 (43 in Banqiao District), and Taipei City had the second highest number, at 99 (38 in Wanhua District). Taoyuan City reported 19 cases; Changhua County reported 12; Keelung City and Taichung City reported 7 each; Kaohsiung City reported 5; Pingtung County and Tainan City reported 3 each; Nantou County and Hsinchu County reported 1 each. 

Of the 256 cases retroactively added to the tally for the past week, 157 are men and the other 99 are women ranging in ages from under 5 to 99 years old. They began to develop symptoms/were tested between May 14 and May 22. Regarding the 256 cases, Taipei City reported most cases, at 148 (76 in Wanhua District), and New Taipei City had the second highest number, at 99 (34 in Banqiao District). Taoyuan City reported 6 cases; Miaoli County reported 2; Taichung City reported 1.

Regarding the six deaths, they are two women and four men between 60 and 79 years old.

The five imported cases arrived in Taiwan from the Philippines (Case #4466), Nepal (Case #4613) and India (Case #4773, Case #4902 and Case #4914).

Case #4466 is an over 30-year-old male from the Philippines. The Filipino man traveled to Taiwan for work on May 9. He was tested on May 23 before completing the quarantine period, and infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on May 24.

Case #4613 is a Taiwanese man in his 30s. He returned to Taiwan on May 22. As he experienced symptoms upon arrival, his sample was collected for testing. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on May 24.
Case #4773, Case #4902 and Case #4914 are a three Taiwanese men, and are in their 40s, in their 20s and in their 50s, respectively. Case #4773 and Case #4914 both returned to Taiwan on May 22. They were quarantined at group quarantine facilities after arrival and were given tests. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the cases on May 24. Case #4902 returned to Taiwan on May 10. He was tested on May 23 before completing the quarantine period, and infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on May 24.

The CECC reported that a cumulative total of 364,911 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 325,070. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 4,917 cases. Of the 4,917 confirmed cases, 1,116 are imported; 3,748 are indigenous; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; 2 are infections on an aircraft; 1 case has unknown sources of infection; 14 cases' sources of infection are being investigated; and 9 cases (Case #530, Case #1589, Case #1676, Case #1591, Case #1886, Case #2067, Case #2068, Case #2528 and Case #2530) have been removed (those case numbers are not assigned to any patients). Of the confirmed cases, there have been 29 deaths.
