On January 2, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced 16,602 new confirmed cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. Of the 16,602 new cases, 16,524 are domestic and 78 are imported. The CECC announced 26 deaths today.

Regarding the 16,524 new domestic cases, 7,443 are male and 9,075 are female, while the gender of the other six cases is under investigation. They range in age from under five to above 90 years. Of those domestic cases, 3,377 were reported in New Taipei City, 2,078 in Taichung City, 1,821 in Taoyuan City,1,751 in Kaohsiung City, 1,655 in Taipei City, 1,337 in Tainan City, 825 in Changhua County, 629 in Hsinchu County, 472 in Hsinchu City, 433 in Miaoli County, 350 in Pingtung County, 297 in Yunlin County, 286 in Keelung City, 260 in Chiayi County, 240 in Nantou County, 213 in Yilan County, 161 in Chiayi City, 120 in Hualien County, 102 in Taitung County, 73 in Kinmen County, 38 in Penghu County, and seven in Lienchiang County.

Regarding the 26 deaths from domestic cases announced today, they were 13 men and 13 women ranging in age from 60 to above 90 years. They were severe cases.

Regarding the 78 imported cases, they all arrived in Taiwan between December 2 and December 31, 2022.

The CECC reported that a total of 20,827,305 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 11,936,361. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 8,889,346 cases. Of the 8,889,346 confirmed cases, 40,378 are imported; 8,848,914 are domestic; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; 3 are infections on an aircraft; 1 case has an unknown source of infection; 14 cases' sources of infection are being investigated. There have been a cumulative total of 15,299 COVID-19 deaths since 2020; of the 15,299 deaths, 15,281 are from domestic cases and the other 18 are from imported cases.
