CECC confirms one domestic case of BA.5 and launches epidemiological investigation, testing for contacts, and enhanced surveillance

On July 15, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced one new domestic case of the Omicron subvariant BA.5 in Taiwan. The BA.5 case is an over 20-year-old female living in northern Taiwan. She has received three COVID-19 vaccine doses and has no history of international travel. She had been diagnosed with COVID-19 in mid-May and recovered. The woman's family members were diagnosed with COVID-19 on July 3 and 5. She developed a runny nose and other symptoms on July 5 and tested positive for COVID-19 with a rapid test on July 6. She then visited the hospital to undergo a PCR test, and it has been confirmed by genome sequencing that she is infected with BA.5.
