CECC confirms 3 more imported COVID-19 cases; cases return to Taiwan from Philippines


On July 24, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced three new confirmed imported cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. The cases are an over 50-year-old male (Case #456), an over 30-year-old male (Case #457), and an over 30-year-old female (Case #458).

Case #456 traveled to the Philippines for work in November of 2019. Case #456 returned to Taiwan from the Philippines on July 13. He developed coughing and fatigue and sought medical attention in the Philippines. Case #456 returned to Taiwan on July 20. As he had a cough and headache upon entry into Taiwan, quarantine officers at the airport arranged his COVID-19 testing. The case was then transported to a group quarantine facility. Although he tested negative for COVID-19 on July 21, the case still had severe coughing. Thus, quarantine personnel at the facility helped the case seek medical care at the hospital where he underwent further testing. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on July 24.

Case #457 traveled to the Philippines to visit his relatives in March of 2020. The case returned to Taiwan from the Philippines on July 13. He developed a headache, an abnormal sense of smell and taste, a fever between July 13 and July 17. On July 20, he reported his symptoms to the local authority which then arranged his COVID-19 testing. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on July 24.

Case #458 visited the Philippines for work in January of 2020. The case experienced a fever, an abnormal sense of smell and taste, and diarrhea. She took a rapid test scheduled by her company in the Philippines, and she tested negative. Case #458 returned to Taiwan on July 22. She voluntarily reported her symptoms to quarantine officers at the airport when entering Taiwan. After the quarantine officers arranged her COVID-19 testing, the case was transported to a group quarantine facility. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on July 24. 

The three cases are currently hospitalized in isolation for medical treatment.

The CECC reported that a cumulative total of 80,270 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 79,263. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 458 cases. Of 458 confirmed cases in Taiwan, 367 are imported and 55 are indigenous while 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship.
