CECC confirms 1 more indigenous case and 1 more case with unknown source of infection


On May 8, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced one new confirmed indigenous case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and one new case of which source of infection is being investigated. The new case under investigation is a pilot for an airline company (Case #1183). The new indigenous case is a family member of and lives with Case #1183.

Case #1183 is a Taiwanese man in his 50s who is an airline pilot. He flew to Vietnam on April 19 and Thailand on April 22 on assignments, and was the flight simulator instructor of Case #1153 on April 28. He was tested under the expanded testing program for pilots on April 24, and his results of PCR testing and antibody testing were all negative. He received the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine on April 29. He experienced fatigue on May 4, and a fever on May 6; he sought medical attention and was tested the same day. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on May 8. The case's source of infection has yet to be determined.

Case #1184 is a Taiwanese woman in her 50s who is a family member of and lives with Case #1183. As Case #1183 tested positive for COVID-19, the health authority arranged for her to undergo testing. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on May 8. The public venues Case #1184 had visited before she was confirmed to have COVID-19 are listed below. Members of the public who have visited those locations during the time periods mentioned below are reminded to practice self-health monitoring for 14 days. If suspected symptoms develop, members of the public must put on a mask and voluntarily inform the physician of any history of contact and activity.

The CECC reported that a cumulative total of 214,706 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 212,250. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 1183 cases. Of the 1183 confirmed cases, 1036 are imported; 96 are indigenous; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; 2 are infections on an aircraft; 1 case has unknown sources of infection; 12 cases' sources of infection are being investigated; and 1 case (Case #530) has been removed (Case #530 is not assigned to any patients). Of the confirmed cases, there have been 12 deaths, and 1082 patients have been released from isolation, with the other 89 patients remaining hospitalized in isolation.
