CECC confirms 2 more imported COVID-19 cases; two cases arrive in Taiwan from Nigeria and the Philippines

On March 4, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced two new confirmed imported cases of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Taiwan. Those two new cases (Case #960 and Case #961) arrived in Taiwan from Nigeria and the Philippines.

The CECC pointed out that Case #960 is an over 50-year-old male from Nigeria. The Nigerian man traveled to Taiwan on February 28. During his home quarantine period, he experienced fatigue on March 2, and he needed to seek medical attention for his chronical diseases. The health authority then arranged for him to seek medical care and undergo COVID-19 testing. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on March 4.

Case #961 is an over 20-year-old male migrant worker from the Philippines. The Philippine migrant worker traveled to Taiwan for work on February 9. Before completing his quarantine period, he was tested for COVID-19 on February 22, and he tested negative. During the self-health management period, the migrant worker visited the hospital to take a self-paid test on February 26. As his RT-PCR test could not produce a confirmatory result, he was admitted to an isolation ward on February 27. He was given RT-PCR tests the same day and on March 2. Infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in the case on March 4.

The CECC reported that a cumulative total of 175,846 cases related to COVID-19 have been reported in Taiwan among which COVID-19 has been ruled out in 173,662. Of these reported cases, infection with COVID-19 was laboratory-confirmed in 960 cases. Of the 960 confirmed cases, 844 are imported; 77 are indigenous; 36 are naval crew members aboard the Panshi fast combat support ship; 2 are infections on an aircraft; 1 case has unknown sources of infection; and 1 case (Case #530) has been removed (Case #530 is not assigned to any patients). Of the confirmed cases, there have been 9 deaths, and 928 patients have been released from isolation, with the other 23 patients remaining hospitalized in isolation.
